Backups¶
Open Settings → Backups. Available from 3.0.1 on iOS, macOS, tvOS and Android, and Windows/Linux build 264. The same .smproxybackup file can be restored on another supported platform.
Create a backup¶
- Select Settings, Subscriptions, or both.
- All subscriptions are selected initially. Clear the subscriptions you do not want to include. Single servers in My servers are included in this selection too.
- Optionally enable Protect the entire backup with a password and enter the password twice.
- Choose Save to file and save the
.smproxybackupfile, or choose Share backup.
Share backup opens the system file-sharing menu on iOS, macOS and Android. On Windows/Linux it copies the generated backup file for pasting into a messenger or email client. The same subscription selection, password and encryption apply to both export actions. File sharing is available from Apple build 382, Android 511 and desktop 265.
Settings include connection options, DNS, censorship bypass, local proxies, appearance, subscription refresh, routing profiles and exclusions. Where supported, the selected servers for automatic Wi-Fi/mobile connections are retained. Android app selection is restored on Android; settings specific to another platform are retained for a later transfer, rather than applied to an unrelated feature.
Subscriptions include the URL, downloaded configuration, single servers, favorites, provider identifier, linked routing profiles and subscription options received in response headers. An internet connection is not required just to read the saved configurations; refreshing a subscription still requires access to its provider.
Protected subscriptions remain encrypted inside every backup, including a backup without an overall password. Their URLs, configurations and header options are encrypted together. Routing profile contents are also encrypted. An optional backup password adds protection to the entire file, including settings and ordinary subscriptions. Keep that password: there is no password recovery.
Restore a backup¶
- Choose Open backup and select the file.
- If the backup has a password, enter it. An incorrect password or a damaged encrypted file is rejected before restoration.
- Review the source platform, creation time and subscription list. Choose whether to restore settings, subscriptions, or both, if present.
- Choose a subscription restore mode:
- Add / update matching subscriptions preserves other subscriptions. A matching URL or subscription identifier updates the existing entry instead of creating a duplicate.
- Replace all subscriptions removes the current subscription list and replaces it with the backup. Explicit confirmation is required.
- Choose Restore. Reconnect the VPN to use restored network settings. On Android, close and reopen Settings to see all restored values.
Restoring a backup does not unlock a protected subscription or grant access to hidden configurations. Platform permissions, such as VPN permission, still need to be granted on the destination device.
Apple TV and Android TV¶
TV devices transfer backup files through a browser on a phone or computer in the same local network:
- To export, select the backup contents and choose Save to file on the TV. Open the displayed address in your browser and choose Download backup.
- To restore, choose Open backup on the TV, open its displayed address in your browser, select a backup file and choose Upload. Enter the password and confirm restoration on the TV.
The address is temporary and specific to that session. Transfer stops when you leave the backup screen or after ten minutes. Files are transferred directly over the local network; this feature does not upload them to a backup service.
